Yes, it's true! Pinta was originally intended to be a sock yarn made of 100% natural fibers, but it quickly proved to be much more than that: it is truly a wonderful versatile yarn that can be used to knit many types of garments and accessories. 

What sets Pinta apart from other yarns is its truly unique composition: 60% merino, 20% silk, and 20% ramie. We source our merino wool from Patagonia. It is mulesing-free and certified RWS (Responsible Wool Standard). RWS is a global voluntary standard that verifies practices at the farm level, ensuring sheep are protected, land is managed properly with special attention to soil health, biodiversity, and native species; and ensures social welfare, good working conditions, and the health and safety of workers. 

Pinta owes its shine and softness to mulberry silk, known as "natural silk" and considered by many as the "queen" of fabrics because it is, after all, the highest quality silk available. 

The yarn draws its strength from its other very special ingredient: ramie, a plant fiber from the nettle family known for its length and toughness. It is an eco-friendly, highly durable fiber and a very good alternative to synthetic fibers. We source both the silk and ramie from China. 

Sustainability and fair trade 

The fibers are processed in a factory located in Arequipa, the second largest city in Peru, where they are cleaned, dyed, and spun. Working conditions are fair, and great value is placed on a recycling economy to protect the environment. This means the entire process is self-sufficient. For example, the mud produced during fiber washing is used to fertilize pastures that will later feed other animals. The use of solar energy helps make energy consumption more environmentally friendly, and the water used is recycled.
